Individual contacts will be able to turn off their ‘Last Seen’ status on WhatsApp in the near future.

WhatsApp is planning to add more detailed privacy options.

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has been hard at work behind the scenes to bring yet another new feature to users. This time, it’s providing its customers with the ability to customize the in-app visibility settings for their “Last Seen” status, according to the company.

Despite the fact that it is a relatively minor change in the grand scheme of things, WhatsApp appears to be committed to improving its users’ overall privacy settings by giving you the agency to personally tailor them to meet your specific needs on a contact-to-contact basis across the messaging platform.

WhatsApp update expert WABetaInfo has confirmed that users will be able to change their “Last Seen” status from one contact to another as a result of the new feature. Note that if you choose to hide your last seen status for certain contacts, you will lose the opportunity to view their last known status as well. It’s likely that users who are committed to hiding their personal in-app statuses won’t have a major problem with this.

WhatsApp’s current configuration allows you to hide your “Last Seen” status from others, preventing them from knowing when you are available. In-app status disabling is now limited to three options: “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” and “Nobody.” The present setting, however, does not allow for a particularly detailed approach to who you want to deactivate the status for. When you are attempting to deal with each of your connections separately, on their own merits and on their own grounds, this may be a bit limiting.

When this is welcome news for consumers concerned about their privacy, WhatsApp has been quite active in other areas as well, delivering a number of upgrades aimed at enhancing the overall user experience while using the messenger on a daily basis, among other things.

With the ability to roll out regular updates, from WhatsApp migration between phones to a slew of brand new WhatsApp for Android features, WhatsApp has the sheer firepower to keep its users up to date – and it looks to have stepped up its game significantly this year.

We haven’t heard anything about when the ‘Last Seen’ update will be available, but it’s expected to be available first on the top iPhone devices, with the best Android phones’ version following shortly after. In any case, we’ll keep you informed as soon as we learn more.
